Student Guide to Successful Tutoring

Get the most out of your tutoring appointment.

Accessing Tutoring Services

Tutoring services are available at no cost to all CT State students. However, students are limited to accessing tutoring at the center where they are taking the class. For example, if you are taking an English class at the Manchester campus, you may only access English tutoring from the Manchester campus. If you are taking additional classes at other campuses, tutoring requests must match the campus where each class is being taken. 

Plan in Advance

Tutors are in great demand. Appointments are often booked days, and sometimes even weeks, in advance. Walk-in labs can be crowded with wait times. To be sure to see a tutor, it is best to visit your campus tutoring center several days ahead of an assignment due date. Appointments may be made up to two weeks in advance. If you are unable to keep an appointment, please call to cancel. We appreciate this courtesy, and so do other students.

Be Punctual for One-to-One Appointments

Any student arriving more than ten minutes late for a one-to-one appointment may have to give up their appointment and reschedule. Appointments begin and end on the hour and the half hour regardless of the time the student arrives. For example, if you arrive for your 10 a.m. appointment at 10:05, you will have until 10:30, not 10:35, for the appointment

Come Prepared

Please bring your textbook, a copy of your assignment, a calculator for math and any notes or drafts of essays for writing assignments, along with specific questions for the tutor. It can also be helpful if you arrive with assignments previously evaluated by your instructor. The more work you have done and the better prepared you are, the more the tutor can assist you.

Take Responsibility

Tutors will assist you as much as they can but will not do the work for you. Their goal is to help students learn strategies to become life-long, independent learners. Whatever assistance the tutor provides, you are responsible for the quality of your own work, and your professor ultimately determines your grade. Working with a tutor is an excellent choice, but there is no guarantee of achieving any particular grade or even passing the class.

Keeping these tips in mind will make for a more effective and enjoyable learning experience.
