The Introduction to Utility Gas and Electric program is a six-week, full-time training program designed to prepare individuals from New Haven and Fairfield Counties for careers in the utility industry. This comprehensive program provides foundational knowledge and hands-on skills in both electrical line work and natural gas operations, helping participants explore rewarding career pathways within the skilled trades. By focusing on underserved communities, the program seeks to expand access to high-demand careers, promote economic mobility, and strengthen the regional utility workforce through industry-recognized training and job readiness preparation. Developed through a partnership between United Illuminating (UI), Southern Connecticut Gas Company (SCG), the Utility Workers Union of America (UWUA) Local 470-1 and CT State Community College – Housatonic Campus, this certificate program equips participants with the knowledge and practical skills necessary to support the safety, reliability and maintenance of utility gas and electric systems.

Training is conducted at Avangrid's Trumbull Training Yard and combines classroom instruction with extensive hands-on learning. The program is led by CT State Housatonic faculty in collaboration with utility professionals from UI Electric, Southern Connecticut Gas Company and UWUA Local 470-1 leadership. Participants accepted into the program will receive practical safety instruction and hands-on training in electrical line construction and natural gas operations. Electrical training includes the safe handling of high- and low-voltage systems, utility pole climbing, hardware installation, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and procedures for working safely around energized lines.

The natural gas component introduces participants to utility gas distribution systems, industry operations, safety procedures, service installation, repair and maintenance practices and other key functions performed by gas utility professionals. Students will also have the opportunity to shadow experienced gas operations personnel, including overhaul and maintenance crews, gaining valuable exposure to real-world utility work environments and industry best practices.
