Welcome to CT State Tutoring and Academic Support Services. Our mission is to help you become a more active and independent learner.

Centers on each campus provide free academic support services both in-person and online. These services vary from campus to campus. Services may include content/subject tutoring, writing tutoring, academic coaching, study labs and more.

Why is Tutoring Helpful?

Participating in tutoring is an active study strategy that allows you to work with someone who is knowledgeable about your class material in a one-on-one or group setting. Tutoring is effective because you get to work through challenging concepts and check your learning as you go.

      Request an Academic Coach

Academic coaching is a unique 1-on-1 service that can help you examine your unique academic concerns and perceived barriers to success through virtual meetings with a professional academic coach who can provide individual semester-long support.

      An academic coach can:

      • help you set short- and long-term goals
      • assess your strengths and needs and reach your full academic potential by developing the skills needed to achieve your academic goals
      • review strategies for success and persistence (goal setting, time management, study strategies, etc.)
      • assist you in forming an action plan to successfully complete coursework and the semester
      • check in and support you throughout the semester

Any student who needs one-on-one support with the services we provide may request an academic coach. You may meet with an academic coach regularly (once a week, once every two weeks, once a month) or meet for a specific need.

Once you request a coach you can expect to hear from us regarding your first meeting.

What to Expect From Your Coaching Appointment

Initial coaching appointments typically last an hour. At the first appointment, your academic coach assesses your needs and makes recommendations. ASC Policies and Best Practices

All students utilizing the services of the ASC agree to abide by these policies and agree to the consequences of policy violations.

      • Cancelations: To cancel an appointment, please email Lisa Knapp-Wilson at lknapp-wilson@mxcc.edu or cancel via your Bookings confirmation email. Students are advised to cancel within 24 hours of their appointment’s scheduled start time. However, the ASC recognizes that sometimes advanced notice is not possible. Appointments canceled within three hours of the appointment’s scheduled start time (or within 15 minutes after the appointment has already started) are considered late cancellations. In the event the student attempts to contact the ASC to cancel an appointment outside the ASC’s operating hours (or the ASC supervisor or other staff member is unavailable to cancel the appointment at the specified time), students are advised to leave a message on the ASC’s voice-mail system, 860-343- 5770. Students will not be unfairly penalized for unsuccessful cancellation attempts that may result due to internal communication errors or staffing discrepancies.
      • No Shows: Students with tutoring appointments have fifteen minutes to arrive for their intended appointment. If you do not arrive within 15 minutes of your appointment’s scheduled start time, you will be considered a no-show. Tutors aren't obligated to meet with a student who arrives more than 15 minutes late for their appointment, but they may still choose to do so at their discretion.

All no-show and late-cancellation occurrences are reported through the Academic Success Center’s appointment scheduling and data-keeping system. The following outlines permissible actions when multiple no-show and/or late cancelations occur:

      1. A combination of three no-shows and/or late cancelations within a semester or term period will result in a warning email from the director or assistant director of the ASC. This email can only be sent to the student’s college email account and cannot be emailed to personal email addresses, even if that email address is on file with the ASC.
      2. Any additional no-shows and/or late cancellations will result in a temporary suspension of appointment-making privileges until the student meets with the director to clarify the policy. Appointment-making privileges will be restored at the conclusion of the meeting/conversation to clarify the policy.
      3. Any subsequent no-show and/or late cancellations may result in a permanent revocation of appointment-making privileges. Affected students may still utilize drop-in tutoring (subsequent to tutor availability). Appointment-making privileges will be restored at the beginning of the following semester/term.

      Tutoring

Subject tutoring is tutoring for content in a specific CT State class. For example, you may meet with a math tutor for your college algebra class, a science tutor for your anatomy and physiology class or an accounting tutor for your financial accounting class.

If subject tutoring is not available for the class you selected, consider checking another campus or meeting with an academic skills coach to review your studying methods.

Writing tutoring is available in the Writing Center, which is area in the Norwalk Tutoring Center where students can get help with any CT State writing assignment, scholarship essays, and transfer essays. Writing tutors can help you with understanding your writing assignment, brainstorming/outlining, drafting, and revision.

Some of our writing tutors are ESL specialists who have extensive experience working with English language learners.

Basic computer skills tutoring is available for students who would like to improve their technology skills. Tutors can assist students with using Blackboard, myCTstate, file management, and other basic computer skills.

PASS (Peer Academic Support Services) tutoring is a special tutoring opportunity for select course sections. The PASS tutor is embedded in the class, meaning they are assigned to attend class each week. Students can receive help from the PASS tutor during class time and/or by appointment at the Tutoring or Writing Center.

      Academic Skills Coaching

Academic skills coaching can help you develop and improve the study, organizational and life skills that contribute to your overall academic success. You can choose to meet with a coach once or maintain a partnership that spans several appointments or semesters. The goal is to help you build skills and adapt to meet the challenges each semester will bring. Academic skills coaching is free and is available in person and online.

Our academic coaches can help you with:

      • note taking
      • organization (digital and paper)
      • presentation skills
      • study strategies
      • test taking
      • textbook reading
      • time management
      • and more!

If you’re not sure what you need help with exactly but would like to talk with someone about your progress and how you’re approaching your class(es), meet with a coach for a general consultation.

      Submit a Paper for Review

Students may submit essays and written assignments for a tutor to review and provide feedback. Tutors will not rewrite, edit or fix your paper for you. They can help you locate issues within your essay and provide guides, links, questions and examples that will help you revise your work yourself and become a better writer.

Students are allowed up to 3 submissions per assignment.

      Study Spaces

You may reserve a study room in the Learning Commons (W 117) to study alone or with a group.
