Melton McAvay Center for Equity and Social Justice
Founded by community leaders Ruby Melton and Gail McAvay, the Melton McAvay Center for Equity and Social Justice (CESJ) at CT State Gateway creates inclusive opportunities for campus-community collaboration. It is a safe, welcoming space for anyone seeking support, resources, or referrals related to personal experiences shaped by their identity.
Strategic Goals
-
Identity
Create opportunities to explore and affirm our identities through storytelling, cultural celebration, and self-defined success pathways.
-
Educational Growth
Advance learning programs and initiatives that prioritize equity, civic activism, and community engagement.
-
Generational Healing
Build resilience within historically underrepresented communities by offering trauma-informed resources.
-
Campus Transformation
Collaborate with students, faculty, staff, and administration to drive institutional change by integrating equity into campus culture, policies, and systems.
-
Community Connection
Expand relationships with local and state organizations to extend the Center's impact beyond campus and into the surrounding community.
Four Pillars
-
Racial, Ethnic, and Social Justice
Dismantling racism, affirming racial identity, and supporting cultural narratives in promoting equitable access and opportunity for marginalized and underserved populations.
-
Gender Equity
Addressing and challenging gender inequity through education, empowerment of women, and non-gender-conforming consciousness, raising activism and allyship.
-
Pride
Honoring and prioritizing intersectional 2SLGBTQIA+ identities and improving campus culture where all queer and transgender students can celebrate and embody their authentic selves.
-
Dreamers, Migrants, and Refugees
Creating a safe and supportive environment for undocumented, migrant, and refugee students by upholding their right to achieve their academic, professional, and personal goals.
Mission
Empowering individuals to explore, affirm, and celebrate their identities, while defining success on their own terms. The CESJ drives social change, on campus and in Greater New Haven, through community-centered programming, advocacy, and support services.
Value Statement
We stand for a community where every individual is treated with dignity, respect, and care: regardless of race, gender, sexuality, ability, immigration status, or belief.
