In partnership with the Oxford Consortium for Human Rights, CT State is offering opportunities to any CT State Community College student to travel to Oxford University and Sonoma State University in California to attend human rights conferences. While in Oxford, students engage in lectures presented by world renowned professors and experts, stay in Oxford dorms and get to explore Oxford!

This year we are accepting applications for the following workshops:

  • Human Rights, Immigration and Community Action
    January 15-19, 2026
    Sonoma State University, California
  • Human Rights in War and Climate Emergency
    March 23-29, 2026
    Brasenose College, Oxford University
  • Human Rights and New Technologies
    July 5-11, 2026
    Magdalen College, Oxford University

Students interested in traveling to Oxford and California are highly encouraged to join our new CT State Human Rights Club to engage in local human rights activities.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I apply?

You can apply via this application. The application deadline is October 17, 2025 at 11:59 p.m.

How do I pay for the trip?

There are a limited number of slots that are paid for through your campus’s foundation. Students who are not selected for the limited slots might also have the opportunity to fund their own trip.

Am I eligible?

In order to be eligible you must be a current CT State student in good academic standing.

How many slots are there?

We typically send anywhere between 6-8 students to each workshop.

Can faculty attend?

Yes, faculty can attend the workshops. For each workshop there are no more than two faculty members that attend.

Are there any academic requirements?

Students are expected to register for a 3-credit HUM1098: Special Topics in Humanities course at CT State Northwestern. This course is covered by financial aid as an unrestricted elective OR a liberal arts elective.

What does travel to Oxford look like?

Students and faculty travel to Oxford together. Students meet at Bradley International Airport where they will fly out to a larger airport and fly into Heathrow. Students will stay in Oxford dorms for the entirety of the program.

Do I need any additional funding?

Students will need some funding for dinners (breakfast and lunch are provided), and any souvenir money they might want.

What makes an applicant a strong candidate?

Students are encouraged to talk about their interest in human rights work, their experience volunteering or working with both on campus and off campus groups, and their goals for attending the workshop. Students will also be required to get a faculty recommendation as part of the application.

When will I be notified if I am accepted into the program?

Applicants will be contacted in mid-November if they are accepted into the program.

Do I need a current passport to apply?

Students do not need a current passport to apply for the program, though it is highly encouraged that students start working on getting a passport as soon as possible if they would like to travel. Current wait times for passports are anywhere between 9-16 weeks. Students will be responsible for getting and paying for their passports.
