Accomplished leader brings experience, energy, and student-centered vision to campuses in Hartford and Farmington.

CT State is proud to announce the appointment of Dr. Sharale W. Mathis as its new President of CT State Capital and CT State Tunxis. A respected academic leader and dedicated champion of student success, Dr. Mathis officially steps into the role with a commitment to building community, empowering students, supporting faculty and staff, and advancing access to opportunity in the Greater Hartford and Farmington regions.

With a diverse professional background spanning biomedical research, STEM education, and community college leadership, Dr. Mathis brings a unique blend of experience, perspective, and purpose to the presidency. Most recently, she served as Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs at Holyoke Community College in Massachusetts. Before entering higher education, she worked in biomedical research, including positions at a biotech company in New Haven and UConn Health Center, where she supported asthma research. Her transition into education was inspired by a desire to make a more direct impact—and she's been doing so ever since.

"I never expected to find myself in education, but once I stepped into the community college environment, I knew I had found my calling," said Dr. Mathis. "It's where I saw innovation, compassion, and opportunity meet. Capital and Tunxis are ready for the next phase of their respective evolutions, and I'm incredibly honored to be part of their journeys."

Dr. Mathis entered the higher education landscape through a National Science Foundation STEM grant collaboration at CT State Manchester (formerly Manchester Community College). From there, her passion for mentoring students, building programs, and leading inclusive initiatives has shaped her path across several institutions throughout New England. She also served as a biology professor at CT State Manchester where her commitment to student success allowed her to have an impact in and outside the classroom.

“This is an important time for the college as we continue to advance the important mission of providing opportunity and access to our students and professionals across the state, and I've felt nothing but warmth and support from the Capital and Tunxis communities. I'm committed to listening, learning, and building with everyone," she shared. "People are ready for stability, consistency, and a clear vision. I'm here to deliver that with transparency and heart."

Known for her approachable leadership style and student-centered focus, Dr. Mathis says she's most excited to work alongside students, faculty, staff, and community partners to expand access, strengthen workforce development, and uphold the College's equity, inclusion, and academic excellence legacy. "I believe in the work of the community colleges in providing enriching learning environments and economic pathways reflective of the communities they serve. I see CT State Capital and CT State Tunxis being the nexus of both."

Dr. Mathis holds a Bachelor's Degree in Biology from Eastern Connecticut State University, a Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences from Quinnipiac University, and a Doctorate in Education Leadership from the University of Hartford. She also completed the Executive Education Women's Leadership Program at the Yale School of Management. "I am a native of Hartford and a proud product of the Hartford Public School system, and I reside in Simsbury. This uniquely places me as a nexus for the communities that serve both campuses," said Dr. Mathis. As a lifelong advocate for community colleges, she believes deeply in their power to transform lives, especially for those seeking a fresh start or a new direction.

"Capital & Tunxis are places of opportunity. Whether you're returning to education, starting your first degree, or pursuing workforce training, our doors are open—and we're here to help you succeed."

Please join us in welcoming Dr. Sharale W. Mathis as the new president of CT State Capital and CT State Tunxis.
