Are you ready for an exciting career helping people in medical need?

Paramedics are first responders in medical emergencies. They work mainly in ambulances or other emergency vehicles, transporting sick or injured patients and providing treatments ranging from first aid to life support.

The Paramedic Studies program at CT State Capital offers a certificate program with two additional degree options that act as extension programs. Learn more about each program below.

Upon graduation, you will have the opportunity to take advantage of the educational career ladder option in higher education. Classroom, simulated laboratory and clinical experiences in the EMT-P program include content and practice skills related to the emergency medical care of pre-hospital patients.

Curriculum

See learning outcomes and required courses for the Paramedic Studies programs.

The Paramedic Certificate Program is designed for students to acquire the cognitive, psychomotor, and affective skills in order to provide pre-hospital emergency medical care to those individuals needing advanced life support (ALS). Graduates of the program are skilled in advanced life support necessary to meet the needs of those agencies or institutions providing emergency medical services to the community.

Included in the curriculum are certifications in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Pre-hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS). Upon successful completion the graduate will be qualified to take the National Registry Exam for state license. Additional fees are required for exam and state licensure.

The Associate in Science Degree in Paramedic Studies is designed as an extension to the Paramedic Certificate program. Graduates of this program will be prepared to assume management-level careers in pre-hospital health administration. They will have learned the skills necessary to plan, implement and manage pre-hospital care. The Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Instructor Option prepares the student to apply for CT certification as an EMS Instructor.

Career opportunities available for graduates of the degree program include employment as supervisors or managers of emergency medical services and as educational coordinators.
