Campus President Kamari A. Collins has more than two decades of leadership experience in student affairs, academic support and community engagement. He is a dedicated advocate for access, equity and student success, with a demonstrated commitment to fostering inclusive learning environments where all students can thrive.

Prior to joining CT State, Campus President Collins served as Vice President for Student Success and Enrollment Management at Chesapeake College in Maryland, where he oversaw a broad portfolio of departments, including student retention, diversity and equity initiatives, financial aid, admissions and advising, TRIO programs and athletics. Under his leadership, Chesapeake expanded student support services, improved enrollment systems and advanced campus-wide belonging initiatives.

Campus President Collins previously held key leadership roles at Springfield Technical Community College in Massachusetts, including Vice President of Student Affairs, Dean of Academic Advising and Student Success, and Director of Academic Advising. Earlier in his career, he served as the Director of Youth Development and Education Programs at the Urban League of Springfield, where he also led Camp Atwater, one of the country’s oldest summer camps serving underrepresented youth.

A champion for equity and opportunity, Campus President Collins brings a student-centered approach to campus leadership, grounded in his belief that education can transform lives and communities. He is an active community leader, and has served on the Boards of Trustees for The Country School, For All Seasons and Polaris Village Ministries. He consistently collaborates with local organizations to strengthen pathways between education and workforce opportunity.

Campus President Collins holds a doctorate degree in Education with a focus on Higher Education Administration from Northeastern University. He earned a master’s degree in Human Services with a concentration in Organizational Management and Leadership, as well as a bachelor’s degree in Movement and Sports Studies and Teacher Preparation from Springfield College.

Campus President Joshua Moon-Johnson is an accomplished academic leader with over twenty years of experience in higher education, focused on advancing student equity, institutional effectiveness and inclusive learning environments.

Before joining CT State, Campus President Moon-Johnson served as Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs at West Valley College, CA, where he led initiatives to improve academic program development, faculty support and equitable student achievement. He previously held a range of leadership positions including Vice President of Student Services at the College of San Mateo, CA, Dean of Equity and Student Services at American River College and Assistant Dean and Director of the Multicultural Student Center at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Earlier in his career, he directed the LGBTQ Center and Non-Traditional Student Center at the University of California Santa Barbara.

Campus President Moon-Johnson’s leadership is shaped by a lifelong commitment to access, diversity and social justice in higher education. He brings a strong focus on holistic student support, data-informed academic planning and cross-functional collaboration to promote institutional excellence. His professional background spans both academic and student affairs, giving him a comprehensive view of how to support students throughout their college journey.

In addition to his administrative roles, Campus President Moon-Johnson has contributed to national conversations on educational equity through research, publishing and service. He has served on the Board of Directors for the Association of California Community College Administrators and chaired the Equity and Social Justice Committee. He also previously served on the boards of the Sacramento LGBT Center and the California Student Opportunity and Access Program. He is also a published author whose works on educational equity and LGBTQ+ advocacy have contributed to national discourse in higher education.

Campus President Moon-Johnson holds a doctoral degree in Adult and Higher Education and LGBT Studies from Northern Illinois University, a master’s degree in Social Sciences with a focus on Student Affairs and Diversity from Binghamton University, a master’s in Marketing Research from the University of Alabama and a bachelor’s degree in Business from the University of South Alabama.

Campus President Shiang-Kwei (Ellen) Wang has a strong track record in academic leadership, research, and cross-sector collaboration. She previously served as Vice President of Academic Affairs and Provost at Hostos Community College, where she oversaw both academic and student affairs. As the institution’s chief academic officer, Campus President Wang worked closely with the president, faculty, and senior leadership to promote student-centered outcomes, academic innovation and operational integration.

Over the course of her career, Campus President Wang has held leadership positions at several institutions, including Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs at Harold Washington College (City Colleges of Chicago), Dean for Research at Queensborough Community College (CUNY), and Associate Dean at New York Institute of Technology, where she was also a tenured professor and Chair of the Instructional Technology Program.

Campus President Wang has led multiple grant-funded initiatives focused on equity and workforce readiness. She has served as principal investigator on major projects funded by the National Science Foundation, U.S. Department of Education and Illinois Community College Board. Additionally, she led Bank of America’s TechQuity initiative, aimed at addressing racial equity gaps in technology-related career pathways.

A nationally recognized scholar in educational technology, Campus President Wang’s research focuses on STEM education, cognitive tools and pedagogical best practices. She is frequently invited to present on the instructional uses of generative artificial intelligence and has led faculty development workshops on emerging technologies. Her contributions have earned her the United Federation of Fil-Am Educators’ Outstanding Leadership in Education Award and a spot on City & State's 2024 Power of Diversity: Asian 100 list.

Campus President Wang earned her Ph.D. from the University of Georgia. She brings to Gateway a deep commitment to equity, academic excellence, and inclusive leadership.

Campus President Sharale Mathis has over twenty years of experience in higher education across both academic and student affairs and is known for her strategic leadership and focus on equity-driven student success. Before joining CT State, Campus President Mathis served as Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs at Holyoke Community College in Massachusetts, where she implemented a "One Team" framework to improve outreach, enrollment, retention and support services.

Campus President Mathis has led major initiatives to revise and implement academic programs, restructure student services and integrate workforce development with local and regional partners. She has collaborated closely with institutional advancement offices to align fundraising and innovation with institutional priorities. Her work is guided by a commitment to inclusive excellence and student achievement, and she often shares her insights at national conferences and panels on strategic planning, open Educational Resources (OER), online education and student success.

Beyond campus leadership, Campus President Mathis serves on several national and state boards, including the American Association of Community Colleges Commission on Institutional Infrastructure and Transformation, the National Council on Black American Affairs – Northeast Region, and the EAB Community College Research Advisory Council. She was recently elected Chair of the Massachusetts Community College Chief Academic Officers Council and is a Fellow of the Thomas Lakin Institute for Mentored Leadership.

Campus President Mathis holds a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of Hartford, a master of Health Sciences degree in Biomedical Sciences from Quinnipiac University and a bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Eastern Connecticut State University. She also completed executive education through the Yale School of Management’s Women’s Leadership Certificate program.

Cheryl De Vonish has led the Norwalk campus since 2019, first as Campus CEO and now as Campus President. A dedicated public servant with over 20 years of experience in government, law and higher education, Campus President De Vonish brings a deep commitment to student success, educational equity, and civic engagement.

Before her appointment as Campus President, she held several senior leadership roles at Norwalk, including Chief Operating Officer, Dean of Students, Chief Diversity and Equity Officer and Special Advisor to the President. She also served as an adjunct faculty member, reinforcing her student-centered approach to leadership.

Campus President De Vonish’s efforts to foster inclusive excellence and campus-wide engagement have earned her widespread recognition. She has been named to the NAACP's 100 Most Influential Blacks in Connecticut list in both 2021 and 2024 and received the Campus Community Award for her leadership and service.

Prior to joining the college, Campus President De Vonish worked as an attorney, bringing legal and advocacy experience to her higher education work. Her professional background emphasizes equity, compliance and policy development — tools she continues to use to support student success and uphold institutional integrity.

A proud alumna of Spelman College and SUNY Binghamton, Campus President De Vonish holds a bachelor of arts degree in Psychology. She earned her Juris Doctorate and is admitted to practice law in both New York and Connecticut. Her dual background in law and education uniquely positions her to navigate the complex challenges facing today’s community colleges.
