NEW BRITAIN—Connecticut State Community College (CT State) has received initial accreditation from the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE) at the commission’s June 16 meeting in York Harbor, Maine.
The decision, effective July 1, 2023, officially allows for the consolidation of the 12 legacy community colleges and the launch of Connecticut State Community College as a singly accredited multicampus institution.
Asnuntuck, Capital, Gateway, Housatonic, Manchester, Middlesex, Naugatuck Valley, Northwestern, Norwalk, Quinebaug Valley, Three Rivers and Tunxis Community Colleges will become campuses of CT State Community College in a transition that has been communicated over the course of the past year to students and community stakeholders. On July 1, campus names will change to CT State with the original campus legacy name identifier listed after the new college name as follows:
- CT State Asnuntuck
- CT State Capital
- CT State Gateway
- CT State Housatonic
- CT State Manchester
- CT State Middlesex
- CT State Naugatuck Valley
- CT State Northwestern
- CT State Norwalk
- CT State Quinebaug Valley
- CT State Three Rivers
- CT State Tunxis
“For over seven years, it has taken thousands of stakeholders and tens of thousands of hours to make this momentous plan a reality,” said CT State Community College President John Maduko, M.D. “This announcement marks a pivotal milestone in our college’s early history in establishing our mission of transforming lives and communities in Connecticut through higher education.”
In the statement issued by NECHE, the commission acknowledged that CT State Community College complies with all nine of NECHE’s Standards of Accreditation, necessary to become an accredited institution. It also outlined a series of ongoing steps to ensure Connecticut State Community College continues to meet all requirements necessary to maintain accreditation, with site visits to campuses scheduled in 2025.
The Commission first reviewed the proposal to consolidate Connecticut’s 12 community colleges into a single institution in 2017, and since that time has required the Connecticut State College and University system to provide documented evidence that the new institution will be in compliance through reports and visits.
