During Community College Month, we are spotlighting the journey of CT State Tunxis student Liliani Lee Feagin of Newington. As a first-generation college student pursuing a degree in criminal justice, she embodies resilience, determination, and a passion for learning. 

Fresh out of high school, Liliani embarked on her college journey with a clear goal in mind: to obtain her degree with minimal financial burden. Like many entering the realm of higher education, she initially felt overwhelmed and unprepared for the intricacies of college life. 

Feagin proactively sought out resources available to her at Tunxis. She enrolled in the SOAR mentoring program, where she found invaluable guidance and support from her mentor, Anarelis Cruz. “Having a connection to someone on campus made me feel important and connected,” said Feagin, and the one-on-one interaction not only provided her with newfound confidence but also unveiled the many resources that some students overlook.

From starting a board game club to delving into the world of theater, Liliani immersed herself in campus life, forging connections and broadening her horizons along the way. “I've met so many people and I'm really happy that I get to experience such a valuable education without the high expense,” she said. “…From scientists to nurses; the students here have real goals and dreams, not only to prove to themselves, but to their families, and to the community.” 

She also discovered a wealth of support systems at Tunxis. “The resources here are extremely helpful, inspiring novels and literature ranging from anatomy to art in Tunxis Library, a food pantry that supplies based on need alone, the Tunxis Foundation that helps students with emergency living needs, a Financial Aid Office that helps students reapply for FAFSA, guided pathways advisors…and staff members just as invested in our success as we are,” Feagin continued. “Without the bus pass provided to students, I wouldn't have a way to get to college,” she added. 

Surrounded by peers with diverse backgrounds and ambitions ranging from scientific breakthroughs to compassionate caregiving, she finds herself part of a community united by a shared pursuit of excellence. The dedication of faculty and staff, the camaraderie among students, and student resources have all played pivotal roles in her academic journey and demonstrate the transformative power of community college education.
