The Honors Program is flexible enough to fit with most degree programs and students can use Honors Program courses to fulfill general education requirements. Student Testimonials

Mukshud Ahamed speaks at podium during academic convivium

Mukshud Ahamed graduated with an associate degree in Biotechnology and transferred to Wesleyan University as an Etherington Scholar. He went on to complete a PhD in Molecular and Cell Biology at Stonybrook University.

"The honors program at MxCC* allowed me to challenge myself academically and professionally and was essential in my transfer to Wesleyan University on a full scholarship. Students like me, who underperformed in high school, deserve as many chances as they require to reach their full potential. The honors program and beyond at MxCC* provide such opportunities."

Manahil Khan speaks into microphone during academic convivium

Manahil Khan transferred to the University of Hartford with a Merit Scholarship. Since earning her bachelor’s degree at UHart, she has been working her way up the ladder at Stanley Black and Decker, currently holding a position as a senior analyst.

"The honors program helped me realize my full potential as a student. It helped me to develop great connections and without the help of my professors who ran the program, I don’t think I would have ended up going to the University of Hartford and I wouldn’t have become as confident.”

Dante Petruzziello speaks at podium during academic convivium

Dante Petruzziello earned an associate degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences degree and then transferred to Yale on a Yale scholarship. He then went to NYU Medical School to fulfill his dream of becoming a physician.

For students who can’t take advantage of face-to-face tutoring services, you may wish to submit a writing assignment for asynchronous tutor feedback. Please be sure to allow ample time before due dates for this process.

Tutors will not rewrite, edit, or correct your writing submission. Instead, they will point out areas where you can improve your writing and offer recommendations and links to resources that will help in the writing and revision process.

For help submitting a paper, contact the ASC.

The Writing Center does not offer individual tutoring appointments; tutors will assist students on a rotating, first-come/first-served basis. No appointment is necessary for the Walk-In Writing Center.

        Services We Offer

        Academic Coaching

        Request an Academic Coach

Academic coaching is a unique 1-on-1 service that can help you examine your unique academic concerns and perceived barriers to success through virtual meetings with a professional academic coach who can provide individual semester-long support.

        An academic coach can:

        • help you set short- and long-term goals
        • assess your strengths and needs and reach your full academic potential by developing the skills needed to achieve your academic goals
        • review strategies for success and persistence (goal setting, time management, study strategies, etc.)
        • assist you in forming an action plan to successfully complete coursework and the semester
        • check in and support you throughout the semester

Any student who needs one-on-one support with the services we provide may request an academic coach. You may meet with an academic coach regularly (once a week, once every two weeks, once a month) or meet for a specific need.

Once you request a coach you can expect to hear from us regarding your first meeting.

What to Expect From Your Coaching Appointment

Initial coaching appointments typically last an hour. At the first appointment, your academic coach assesses your needs and makes recommendations. Your coach may recommend follow-up appointments, referrals to academic support services and suggest ways to develop effective learning strategies or time management skills. If follow-up sessions are needed, your coach will monitor your progress and work with you to create and develop success strategies.

        Submit a Paper for Review

        Submit a Paper Online

If you would like to submit an essay or paper for a tutor to review and provide comments on, you may do so here. You will receive a confirmation email when your paper has been successfully submitted, and a tutor will respond to your request or send back your paper with suggestions within 48 hours, or 72 hours if on a weekend. Be sure to allow ample time before your due date for this process.

Tutors will not rewrite, edit, or correct your writing submission. Instead, they will point out areas where you can improve your writing and offer recommendations and links to resources that will help you revise it.

Use of an AI Generator such as ChatGPT is explicitly prohibited unless otherwise noted by the instructor. The information derived from these tools is based on previously published materials. Therefore, using these tools constitutes plagiarism. By submitting assignments to the Academic Success Center (ASC), you are attesting that the work submitted is your own. The ASC reserves the right to refuse to review any suspected AI-generated papers.

If you experience a technical problem when submitting your essay, please email Lisa Knapp-Wilson at lisa.knappwilson@ctstate.edu (Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.).

        Workshops

The ASC is happy to present weekly virtual workshops designed to help you achieve your academic success.

Each workshop is 30-60 minutes long. When it's time for the workshop, click on the title to join. All workshops will take place in MS Teams. We look forward to seeing you!

        ASC Policies and Best Practices

All students utilizing the services of the ASC agree to abide by these policies and agree to the consequences of policy violations.

        • Cancelations: To cancel an appointment, please email Lisa Knapp-Wilson at lknapp-wilson@mxcc.edu or cancel via your Bookings confirmation email. Students are advised to cancel within 24 hours of their appointment’s scheduled start time. However, the ASC recognizes that sometimes advanced notice is not possible. Appointments canceled within three hours of the appointment’s scheduled start time (or within 15 minutes after the appointment has already started) are considered late cancellations. In the event the student attempts to contact the ASC to cancel an appointment outside the ASC’s operating hours (or the ASC supervisor or other staff member is unavailable to cancel the appointment at the specified time), students are advised to leave a message on the ASC’s voice-mail system, 860-343- 5770. Students will not be unfairly penalized for unsuccessful cancellation attempts that may result due to internal communication errors or staffing discrepancies.
        • No Shows: Students with tutoring appointments have fifteen minutes to arrive for their intended appointment. If you do not arrive within 15 minutes of your appointment’s scheduled start time, you will be considered a no-show. Tutors aren't obligated to meet with a student who arrives more than 15 minutes late for their appointment, but they may still choose to do so at their discretion.

All no-show and late-cancellation occurrences are reported through the Academic Success Center’s appointment scheduling and data-keeping system. The following outlines permissible actions when multiple no-show and/or late cancelations occur:

        1. A combination of three no-shows and/or late cancelations within a semester or term period will result in a warning email from the director or assistant director of the ASC. This email can only be sent to the student’s college email account and cannot be emailed to personal email addresses, even if that email address is on file with the ASC.
        2. Any additional no-shows and/or late cancellations will result in a temporary suspension of appointment-making privileges until the student meets with the director to clarify the policy. Appointment-making privileges will be restored at the conclusion of the meeting/conversation to clarify the policy.
        3. Any subsequent no-show and/or late cancellations may result in a permanent revocation of appointment-making privileges. Affected students may still utilize drop-in tutoring (subsequent to tutor availability). Appointment-making privileges will be restored at the beginning of the following semester/term.

        Tutoring

Subject tutoring is tutoring for content in a specific CT State class. For example, you may meet with a math tutor for your college algebra class, a science tutor for your anatomy and physiology class or an accounting tutor for your financial accounting class.

If subject tutoring is not available for the class you selected, consider checking another campus or meeting with an academic skills coach to review your studying methods.

Writing tutoring is available in the Writing Center, which is area in the Norwalk Tutoring Center where students can get help with any CT State writing assignment, scholarship essays, and transfer essays. Writing tutors can help you with understanding your writing assignment, brainstorming/outlining, drafting, and revision.

Some of our writing tutors are ESL specialists who have extensive experience working with English language learners.

Basic computer skills tutoring is available for students who would like to improve their technology skills. Tutors can assist students with using Blackboard, myCTstate, file management, and other basic computer skills.

PASS (Peer Academic Support Services) tutoring is a special tutoring opportunity for select course sections. The PASS tutor is embedded in the class, meaning they are assigned to attend class each week. Students can receive help from the PASS tutor during class time and/or by appointment at the Tutoring or Writing Center.

Academic skills coaching can help you develop and improve the study, organizational and life skills that contribute to your overall academic success. You can choose to meet with a coach once or maintain a partnership that spans several appointments or semesters. The goal is to help you build skills and adapt to meet the challenges each semester will bring. Academic skills coaching is free and is available in person and online.

Students are allowed up to 3 submissions per assignment.

        Study Spaces

The Learning Center also proctors make-up tests and quizzes for students with accommodations (Danielson only). These tests do not need an appointment.

Finally, the Center also provides proctored testing for Quinebaug Valley students, including CLEP and CBE:

CLEP testing is provided through an outside service and is fee-based. CLEP provides transferable college credit if completed with a passing score. Appointments are required. Please call 860-932-4051 to schedule an appointment.

Credit By Exam (CBE) tests are Quinebaug Valley-provided tests that can be taken to gain college credit at CT State. CBE’s provide CT State credit only; CBE credits do not transfer, and the CBE does not affect the student’s GPA. Students must be currently registered in at least one credit class at CT State Quinebaug Valley and have the permission of the faculty member in charge of the subject area. The student will need to pay a $15 fee to take a CBE.

All testing requires a photo ID to be shown upon arrival. Students who do not have a photo ID with them will not be permitted to test until a valid photo ID is produced.

Please call 860-932-4051 for more information regarding CLEPs and CBEs.

Complete information on testing is available in the Learning Center.
