The Science and Mathematics Department offers engaging learning opportunities in science and mathematics for students with a diverse range of academic and career interests. These learning opportunities emphasize the acquisition of mathematical and scientific knowledge as well as the development of quantitative and scientific reasoning skills.

By engaging in the study of science and mathematics, students experience how these academic areas are integral and applicable to their lives. Students learn how to apply science to solve problems through lab experiences, research, and coursework and to think collaboratively and critically. Faculty in both science and mathematics prepare students for future success in technical and non-technical career pathways, developing written, oral, and graphical communication skills. They learn new concepts and techniques as required for continuing professional development, and prepare to take industry-based certification exams.

To support an increasing number of health-related careers, CT State offers many academic options for prospective students. Health career professionals collaborate in a variety of health fields to help evaluate, treat and prevent illnesses, and individuals with many different skill levels can be successful in these areas. While some professions involve working directly with patients, others work behind the scenes, playing important roles in the healthcare field.

Students who enjoy helping others, doing hands-on or detailed work, problem-solving, or have an interest in a medical-related field can find an affordable and flexible career solution by earning an associate degree or certificate in one of many allied health fields. Allied health consists of a group of health professionals who work toward the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. These professionals also promote disease prevention and wellness and work to support various healthcare systems.

For students interested in a career in nursing, the Connecticut Community College Nursing Program (CT-CCNP) is an innovative associate degree program of study offered at six campuses. The program serves a diverse population of students, offers excellent clinical sites, and has a thirty-plus-year record of proven success.

For students interested in other health careers, such as laboratory medicine, occupational and physical therapy assistant, respiratory care, and more, we offer degrees, certificates and associate degree programs that, in many cases, can be built upon and lead to a higher degree at our other four-year institutions.

CT State’s Engineering and Technology programs emphasize how users interact with technology, the complexity of an information-rich society, and the impact of information in our lives. We pride ourselves in offering rich learning environments and pedagogically sound learning experiences.

Many of the engineering and technology associate degree programs at CT State have specialized curriculums to begin technology or engineering technology studies and transition to earning a four-year, bachelor’s degree in engineering or technology.

Students can also put their strengths to work and gain the skills needed to move quickly into entry-level manufacturing jobs. Manufacturing is resurging in Connecticut and beyond, and CT State Community College’s manufacturing degree and certificate programs enhance skills needed to work in many technical fields. Through attrition and the need for a highly skilled workforce, manufacturers are facing a shortage of skilled workers. Businesses rely on these employees’ knowledge of critical business elements and principles to be successful.

At CT State, students learn with real-world application and experience in current business practices. Our programs equip students with the skills they need to learn the value of information and technology in a variety of business environments. From information management to paralegal, our programs cover a variety of environments where students can apply highly portable tools and approaches to solving complex problems.

For those interested in hospitality and culinary, our graduates have gone on to own bakeries, serve as chefs and managers in both formal and informal restaurants, work in foodservice settings in health care, business and industry, work in hotels of all sizes and hold management positions in many areas of the hospitality and culinary fields.

By earning an associate degree or certificate in a business-related program, students can apply skills to a variety of industries after graduation or transition to a path to transfer to a four-year college or university for those wishing to continue their studies.

A degree from the School of Arts and Humanities builds crucial skills such as critical thinking, creativity, communication, and cross-cultural understanding.

Our students gain the tools to cultivate a deep understanding of different cultures and cultural differences — historically, geographically, and artistically. Arts and humanities students are distinct in their ability to bring innovative solutions to novel challenges.

The School of Arts and Humanities offers a rich array of courses in art and design, communication, digital and media production, English, languages and culture and performing arts, which serves to guide and educate students to reflect critically on the role of the humanities in their personal and professional growth; to connect students to the rich cultural mosaic of Connecticut, the region, and the world; and to foster a vibrant environment of artistic and scholarly activities for the college and surrounding communities. Students will study both the impact of change on our culture and the timeless perspectives that have shaped our lives and thought.

For individuals with many strengths and interests, CT State offers focused associate degree or certificate programs leading to creative and productive careers, and provides opportunities for hands-on, real-world engagement. Pathway programs are available in several majors, allowing students to gain course credits that directly transfer to a bachelor's degree program at Connecticut colleges and universities.
